Ages 8-10 Big Feelings, Calm Choices

Everyone experiences big feelings from time to time. Feeling worried, frustrated, disappointed, excited or angry is a normal part of growing up. The important question isn’t whether we have big feelings it’s what we choose to do with them.

In this interactive session, children will learn to recognise their emotions, understand what might be causing them and explore positive ways to respond. Through games, discussions and practical activities, children will discover that feelings give us important information, but our choices help shape what happens next.

At Learn 2 Be Social, we believe that understanding comes before social skills. When children understand why they feel the way they do, they are better able to make calm, thoughtful choices.

💙 Why This Topic Matters

Children are often told to “calm down” or “stop getting upset” without being shown how to understand what they are feeling or what they can do differently.

By learning to recognise emotions, pause before reacting and think about possible choices, children begin to build the confidence to manage everyday challenges.

📚 What Children Will Learn

During this session, children will explore:

  • Why all feelings are normal and important.
  • How to recognise different emotions in themselves.
  • What can happen when big feelings take over.
  • The difference between reacting and responding.
  • Simple ways to pause and think before acting.
  • Practical problem-solving strategies for everyday situations.
  • How thoughtful choices can lead to positive outcomes.

⏰ Session length

45 minutes of interactive learning

Please allow up to one hour for your booking. An additional welcome period gives children time to settle in, get to know one another and feel comfortable before the structured learning begins.

✅ Prerequisites

Access to Nearpod is recommended (login details will be provided before the session).

  • If possible, use two devices:
    • One device for the live video session.
    • A second device (tablet, laptop, or another screen) for participating in Nearpod activities.
  • A quiet space with a stable internet connection will help children get the most from the session.

You could also add a reassuring note:

Don’t worry if you only have one device. Children can still take part using a single device, although two screens provide the best experience.  These are standalone sessions, so children can attend just one topic or join multiple sessions throughout the summer.
