Ages 11-13 Understanding The Unspoken Rules

Understanding the Unspoken Rules of Social Interaction

Every day, we make sense of the social world by noticing what is happening around us. We read facial expressions, body language, tone of voice and the environment to help us decide what to do, what to say and how to respond.

For some young people, these social clues are easy to miss or difficult to interpret, which can lead to misunderstandings, uncertainty or feeling out of step with others.

This interactive session helps young people develop their ability to notice, interpret and respond to the social clues they encounter in everyday life

At Learn 2 Be Social, we believe that understanding comes before social skills. When young people understand what is happening around them, they are better equipped to make thoughtful social choices.

💙 Why This Topic Matters

Many social expectations are never explained they are simply assumed.

Young people are often expected to know when to join a conversation, recognise when someone wants space, understand different social settings or notice how others are feeling without anyone ever teaching them how.

Learning to recognise social clues helps young people feel more confident, communicate more effectively and better understand the people around them.

📚 What Young People Will Learn

During this session we will explore:

  • What social clues are and why they matter.
  • How facial expressions, body language and tone of voice influence communication.
  • How different environments change what is socially expected.
  • How to notice what other people may be communicating without words.
  • Why different people can interpret the same situation differently.
  • How using social clues can help make thoughtful social decisions.

🎲 Activities

This is a highly interactive workshop where young people explore real-life situations and learn through discussion and practical activities.

Activities include:

  • Interactive Nearpod activities.
  • Opinion polls and quizzes.
  • Picture and video discussions.
  • Real-life social scenarios.
  • Group discussions and problem-solving.
  • Reflection activities.
  • Practical strategies that can be used in everyday life.

There is no pressure to speak if a young person.  The aim is to create a welcoming environment where everyone feels comfortable learning together.

  • Better understand social situations.
  • Build confidence in everyday interactions.

⏰ Session length

45 minutes of interactive learning

Please allow up to one hour for your booking. An additional welcome period gives children time to settle in, get to know one another and feel comfortable before the structured learning begins.

✅ Prerequisites

Access to Nearpod is recommended (login details will be provided before the session).

  • If possible, use two devices:
    • One device for the live video session.
    • A second device (tablet, laptop, or another screen) for participating in Nearpod activities.
  • A quiet space with a stable internet connection will help children get the most from the session.

You could also add a reassuring note:

Don’t worry if you only have one device. Children can still take part using a single device, although two screens provide the best experience.  These are standalone sessions, so children can attend just one topic or join multiple sessions throughout the summer.
